LIGHTUGANDA KUROILER
(Project Period: 2022-2023)
The aim of this project was to empower girls, and teenage mothers economically through sustainable agricultural practices-poultry farming. Through these initiatives, we strive to create employment opportunities, improve food security, and foster a sense of self-reliance among these girls and teenage mothers.
Problem Statement
Out of the 5000 teenage pregnancies recorded during Covid-19 period in Northern Uganda, 58.5% are from Kitgum-New Vision [May 15th 2021]. In Omiya-Anyima Subcounty, Kitgum District, teenage mothers engage unpaid labour such as washing clothes, and cleaning to provide their families with daily food. They are purely housewives, who wait for whatever the husband brings home. Unfortunately, most of them have been left by their husbands due to no income to sustain their families. This has led to an increase in food insecurity and poverty among these teenage mothers, which has resulted to most of them abandoning their families and children.
Our solution
Leinados Star Ltd implemented LightUganda Kuroiler, engaging teenage mothers in poultry farming using advanced techniques. Trained them on rearing of high-yield Kuroiler Chicken for meat. Additionally, we offered financial management training, capacity building, and psychosocial support. This approach was aimed at improving the economic stability, food security, and over all well-being of these teenage mothers.
Our Impacts

- Increased income for our beneficiaries through the sales of eggs

- Connected our beneficiaries to the market to ease sales of the chicken
