LIGHTUGANDA LAYERS
(Project Period: July 2025-Present)
Problem Statement
Out of the 3430 teenage pregnancies recorded between 2022 and 2023 in Northern Uganda,61.5% are from Kitgum- Daily monitor [January 8th 2024]. In Pella Village, Kitgum District, 7/10 of all teenage mothers engage in unpaid labour such as washing clothes, and cleaning to provide their families with daily food. This has led to an increase in food insecurity and poverty among these teenage mothers, which has resulted to most of them abandoning their families and children.
Our solution
In response, Leinados Star Ltd started LightUganda Layers, engaging teenage mothers in rearing of layers for eggs using advanced techniques. We also offer financial management training, capacity building, and psychosocial support. This approach aims to improve the economic stability, food security, and overall well-being of these teenage mothers.
Our Traction
- Secured a grant worth $5,000 from EU Youth Empowerment Fund to facilitate the implementation of this project in a period of 6 months from July 2025.
- Constructed a 500-Capacity chicken house for the layers.
- Recruited 30 beneficiaries who are teenage mothers within the age of 19-25 years.
- Successfully completed the training of the beneficiaries and interested local farmers on rearing and management of layers.
- Completed the training on financial literacy and record keeping.
- Sensitized the community on the importance of commercial rearing of layers.
- Purchased 500 layer chicken, and the beneficiaries have started rearing these birds together on the farm.
Ongoing Activities
- Continuously establishing partnerships with buyers of eggs to ease the sale of eggs by the beneficiaries.
- Continuously providing psychosocial supports to our beneficiaries and the community.
